Photoshop

As an artist, photoshop has made things infinitely easier in respect to the creation of art. Traditional art, which becomes expensive when costs accumulate over time, is restricted by the fact that it exists on a finite medium that may very well be destroyed or ruined. However, digital art has eliminated this problem by becoming virtual. Photoshop, which allows you to employ the use of multiple layers when creating art, allows you to save, edit, and re-edit photos/digital paintings in ways that would otherwise be impossible in a real world setting. Unfortunately, like many other design programs, Photoshop requires time and effort in order to be used effectively. Mastering Photoshop, however, also requires experience in traditional media. This is because much of the technique involved in producing traditional works carries over to digital art. Hand-eye coordination, for example, is a skill that must be developed before realistic face painting in photoshop can be achieved.

I took four years of art in high school and one semester of computer art and I found computer art to be much more difficult in the beginning than its traditional predecessor. Perhaps I just lack the experience with digital mediums like Photo-shop, but by the end of the semester I could definitely see the meshing of traditional and digital mediums of art especially for the future of art. Do you think this meshing of traditional and digital techniques will broaden the spectrum for more people to express themselves through art, or will it make art more exclusive?

Good question. It has already broadened the spectrum of expression by providing artists with an alternative approach. Regardless of whether digital and traditional media "mesh", the two will never suffer at the expense of the other. Also, as with every new medium since the beginning of time, this newfound media will require some form of mastery. Oil painting, for example, takes years of experience before one becomes somewhat comfortable with its basic fundamentals. Digital art is not the exception to the rule.
